Work Health and Safety Compliance Checklist



This Work Health and Safety Compliance Checklist sets out a list of work health and safety (WHS) obligations of a business or any other persons conducting an undertaking in Australia. This checklist applies to all states and jurisdictions that have enacted the model WHS Laws.

This Work Health and Safety Compliance Checklist relates to the main obligations and duties specified under the WHS Act as well as to the more specific and detailed obligations under the WHS Regulations. This Checklist may be used as an additional reference source for building your WHS Compliance Register.

Purpose

The purpose of this Work Health and Safety Compliance Checklist is to set out a summary of work health and safety (WHS) obligations of [Organisation name] and is used for checking against the WHS Compliance Register.

The design, planning, implementation and monitoring of all WHS obligations of [Organisation name] are part of the policies and procedures described in the following documents:

  3. Compliance Management Procedures

Scope

[Organisation name]’s WHS obligations extend to all workplaces in [business locations] and to all workers of [Organisation name]. The WHS obligations also apply to all current and future activities of [Organisation name], and to any new opportunities [Organisation name] may encounter from time to time. This Work Health and Safety Compliance Checklist covers obligations from the WHS Act and WHS Regulations.

[Organisation name]’s workers include all of the following:

  1. Employees
  2. Contractors
  3. Sub-contractors
  4. Employees of contractors or sub-contractors
  5. Employee of labour hire company assigned to work in the person’s business or undertaking, or
  6. Outworker
  7. Apprentices and trainees
  8. Students gaining work experience
  9. Volunteers
  10. Any other individuals who carries out work in [Organisation name].

[Organisation name]’s workplaces cover any place where work is carried out for [Organisation name] and any place where a worker goes or is likely to be while at work.

Places include any vehicle, vessel, aircraft or other mobile structure and any waters and any installation on land, on the bed of any waters or floating on any waters.

All reference sources in this Work Health and Safety Compliance Checklist are based on the WHS Act (sections) and the WHS Regulations (regs) respectively.

Section 19(3)(d) Safe use, storage and handling [Organisation name] must provide for safe use, handling, and storage of plant, structures and substances
Section 19(3)(e) Adequate facilities for welfare of workers at work [Organisation name] must provide for adequate facilities for the welfare at work of workers in carrying out work for the business or undertaking, including ensuring access to those facilities
Section 19(3)(f) Adequate training and information [Organisation name] must provide all information, training, instruction and supervision necessary to protect all persons from risks to health and safety
Section 19(3)(g) Precautions and monitoring against illnesses [Organisation name] must ensure health of workers and conditions at the workplace are monitored to prevent illness or injury of workers
Section 19(4) [Adequate accommodation [Organisation name] must provide adequate accommodation and maintain premises used for accommodation (only if accommodation must be provided when carrying out work and activities for [Organisation name].
Section 20 Proper facilities management [Organisation name] must ensure workplace and means of entering and exiting are at no risks to health and safety of any persons
Section 21 Safe fixtures, fittings and plant [Organisation name] must ensure fixtures, fittings or plant at workplace are without risks to health and safety of any persons

Design, manufacture and operation of plant, substance or structure
